HOW TO USE NATURAL LIGHTING...

I get a lot of questions around how to properly use natural lighting to take good pictures of your kids of family. Natural lighting is my number one favorite!!! Don't get me wrong, studio pictures are cute and traditional but nothing beats the look and feel of pictures taken outside.

The number one thing to remember when taking pictures outside is the time of day. When the sun is too bright it is hard to not have your subject look "washed out" in the picture. My favorite time of day to take pictures is right before sunrise or sunset. This gives you the soft glow that you want and beautiful colors.

The number two thing to remember is the direction of the lighting. Make sure your source of lighting is BEHIND you. This allows your subject to have a natural "spot light" on them. Combine the time of day and the lighting behind you, VOILA! You have a natural canvas that will make your subject look amazing! Below is a great example of lighting and how it should be used. You can see that the time of day combined with the lighting coming from the right direction makes a huge difference!
